Shame, along with shame and guilt, is treated as a self-blame or negative self-conscious emotion. Many people are interested in its development and its relationship to psychopathology. However, there has not been a consistent view of the brain basis of this emotion. Research on the neural basis of shame and the conceptual and methodological issues behind it are discussed in a special issue of the Journal of Clinical Psychology entitled "Is Shame an Enemy? Friend or Foe? -The Roots of Lifelessness and Hurt." (Sugiura)
