The Self in the Brain

How is the ‘self’ born in the brain and how it affects our cognition, behavior, and social adaptation? We are trying to solve mysteries about various aspects of the self, such as physical, social, and mental health.

202204.01 Bittersweet memories of those days (new research project) Posted in RESEARCH

The word "nostalgic" has a wide variety of textures. It is thought that the diversity of textures is created by the memory aspect of "that day, that place," and "those days," and the emotional aspect of "happiness" and “bittersweetness". What kind of difference in brain activity causes nostalgia of different textures?
In this study, which was selected as a Grant-in-Aid for Young Scientists, we will elucidate the neural representations of textures such as "bittersweet memories of those days" through functional MRI studies focusing on (1) the hierarchy of autobiographical memories (episodic and semantic autobiographical memories) and (2) emotional valence (positive and negative), which constitute nostalgia.
