The Self in the Brain

How is the ‘self’ born in the brain and how it affects our cognition, behavior, and social adaptation? We are trying to solve mysteries about various aspects of the self, such as physical, social, and mental health.

202210.15 The power of positive words (Poster Presentation) Posted in RESEARCH

Positive words are often used to evoke positive psychological effects to one's mind. However, it is not clear yet what kinds of positive words exist and what types of people benefit the most/least from them. We conducted three online surveys to establish a data-driven categorization of positive phrases and to explore their effects’ relationship with the participant's personality and mental states. Based on a series of online surveys with a total of 1,350 participants, we found that people with high neuroticism and/or high degree of distress tend to receive lower psychological effects from positive words. Our results suggest that the use of positive words can be optimized by considering the personality and mental states of the persons who receive them.
We presented this study at the 20th convention of Japanese Society for Cognitive Psychology held in Kobe, Japan. (Ishibashi)
