People with eating disorders have body-image disturbance, such as difficulties in estimating one’s body size and extremely strong negative feelings towards one’s body. Some healthy people also have body-image disturbance and such individuals are more likely to develop symptoms of eating disorders. However, it remained unclear how to reduce body-image disturbance and its related neural responses. This study examined neural responses before and after body-image interventions. We found that visuospatial processing regions were related to improvements in body-size estimation, while socio-cognitive processing regions were related to a decrease in negative feelings toward one’s body.
