How do orchestra performers stay synchronized with the entire orchestra? There is a delay in the speed of sound caused by the physical distance between the players. Therefore, if performers try to play along with the sound coming from other performers at a distance, it will be hard to synchronize with the delayed sounds. In this study, we conducted interviews with orchestra performers to clarify how they actually hear the sounds and what kind of information they use to assist synchronization or catch the onset of synchronization. As a result, it is suggested that the sounds of performers coming from a distance are perceived at a constant delay, professional performers practice to avoid being disturbed by the delayed sounds, and visual cues such as the movement of the concert master help performers synchronize. This research was presented at the 37th annual meeting of the Japanese Cognitive Science Society (JCSS) held online. (Toida)
