An fMRI study of L2 implicit knowledge (Paper publication)
Posted in RESEARCH
There are two types of linguistic knowledge: explicit knowledge, which is used consciously, and implicit knowledge, which is used unconsciously. Implicit knowledge in second languages (L2) is said to be difficult to acquire as it is in native languages (L1). In this study, we investigated whether L2 adult learners who are learning L2 in an enriched environment can use the implicit grammatical knowledge of the L2, and what neural bases are involved in implicit knowledge. The results of examining brain regions and activities verified that they are able to use L2 implicit knowledge in their brains, although it is less automatic than that of L1 speakers. The results suggest that implicit knowledge may be acquired in adult second language acquisition. The research is published in Studies in Second Language Acquisition, one of the prestigious international journals in the field of applied linguistics.
