202210.06 Brain basis of adaptive emotional regulation traits (Preprints release) Posted in RESEARCH

Cognitive reappraisal (reinterpreting situations to make them less painful) and acceptance (accepting reality as it is and not valuing it) are known as adaptive coping strategies for emotional stress. The former is a mainstream concept of cognitive-behavioral therapy and the latter of mindfulness, and the former has been associated with high activity in the higher cognitive control system and the latter with low activity. However, in a study of the survivors of the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake, adaptive traits encompassing both were identified, and now our study using functional MRI showed its relation to low activity of the higher-order cognitive control system.
