202102.24 Are the elderly more motivated than the young? Posted in RESEARCH

It is believed that one's motivation in general declines as s/he gets old. Is it really the case? We developed a psychometiric tool (questionnaire) to measure the level of motivation in the elderly and compared the scores across different age groups between 50s to 70s. Analysis showed there were three major factors in trait motivation in Japanese population; non-apathy, aspiration and optimism. Contrary to the general expectations, the results also showed that older people are more motivated than younger population. The data indicate that the belief that elderly people are more apathetic than the young is not the case in reality. I gave a talk on this study in the 4th Interactive Seminar at IDAC. (Ishibashi)
